Mercury Retrograde from 24 October to 13 November 2026

My grandmother in Izmir never talked about Mercury. She only said: when letters lose their way, read them twice before you answer. That is exactly what a Mercury retrograde is, and the last one of 2026 falls in Scorpio. That makes it denser than the two before it.

What retrograde really means

Mercury does not walk backwards. Seen from Earth it only looks that way, because Earth overtakes it on its orbit. A slower train on the next track seems to roll backwards for a moment, even though both trains are moving forward. Same thing.

Before the motion turns, Mercury slows down and appears to stand still. That is called a station. The retrograde station and the direct station are the two days when the theme is loudest. Mercury rules language, contracts, messages, journeys, devices and thinking itself. When he stands still, all of that goes up for review.

So retrograde does not mean everything breaks. It means that whatever was already said, written or planned comes back to the table.

Dates of the autumn phase

Mercury turns retrograde on 24 October at 09:11 Central European Time, at 20°58’ Scorpio. On 13 November at 16:55 he stands still again, this time at 5°02’ Scorpio, and then moves direct.

Then there is the shadow. Mercury first enters the stretch between 5°02’ and 20°58’ Scorpio on 4 October. From then on he crosses degrees he will later walk again in reverse. Only on 30 November does he reach the point of his first station once more, and the story is told.

Why this phase is different

Scorpio. In Pisces in spring Mercury was dreamy, in Cancer in summer it was about family and memory. In Scorpio it is about what lies under the surface: secrets, debts, shared money, inheritance, intimacy and everything said behind closed doors. Scorpio does not ask what you said. It asks what you left out.

Venus at the same time. Venus has been retrograde since 3 October, starting at 8°29’ Scorpio, and only turns direct on 14 November, at 22°52’ Libra. In the last days of October she slips back out of Scorpio into Libra. So Mercury and Venus move backwards together from 24 October to 13 November. Mercury is the word, Venus is the value: love, money, taste. When both look back at once, old relationships and old bills often come up in the same conversation.

The full moon in Taurus. Just two days after Mercury’s station, on 26 October at 05:12, the full moon sits at 2°46’ Taurus with the Sun exactly opposite at 2°46’ Scorpio. Pluto at 3°06’ Aquarius squares both. That is a tight T-square in fixed signs: Taurus wants to keep, Scorpio wants to know, Pluto in Aquarius wants to ask who holds the power. Around this full moon, things come to light that someone would rather have kept locked away, often around property and money.

What to check before you sign

Nobody can put life on hold for three weeks. Contracts get signed now too, leases ended, accounts opened. Mercury in Scorpio only asks you to read more carefully than usual. I do not give legal advice, but these are the questions I ask myself:

• The small print about money. Interest, fees, auto renewal, notice periods. Scorpio likes to hide in footnotes.
• Shared money. Who pays what, who owns what, who is liable? With leases, loans and business partnerships, double it.
• Old agreements. Is there an earlier version, a spoken promise, an email from last year that contradicts this? Dig it out.
• Names, numbers, dates. Spellings, account numbers, deadlines. A swapped letter is the classic Mercury sign.
• What is not on paper. If someone promises you something out loud that is not in the contract, have it written in.
• One night of distance. Anyone pushing you to sign today usually has a reason. Sleep on it.

If you have the choice, put signatures in the pre-shadow or after 13 November. If not, read twice and ask once more.

What comes easily now

Retrograde phases are poor for fresh starts, but good for everything that begins with “re”.

• Reread. Old letters, old contracts, your own journal. What you missed back then stands out now.
• Revisit. A project left lying around, a half finished text, a course you dropped.
• Reconnect. Someone with whom the conversation broke off. With Venus retrograde, former partners also tend to get in touch. Whether you answer is your call. Read the message twice.
• Reorganise. Files, passwords, backups, subscriptions. Mercury in Scorpio loves clearing out accounts you forgot you had.
• Restate. Something that landed wrong behind a closed door can be set right now. In these weeks one clarifying sentence does more than a new plan.

In a coffee cup reading, a phase like this often shows as a road that leads back to the handle, or a letter lying near the bottom of the cup: something old that is not yet finished.

The autumn phase is the third of the year. The first ran from 26 February to 20 March in Pisces, the second from 29 June to 24 July in Cancer. All three fall in water signs. If you paid attention this year, you saw a pattern: first hunches, then memories, now the truth behind them.
